Animax Carnival 2012
This was the first ever cosplay anime event (poorly) organized by Astro Animax.
The spirit of the participants were high but the organizer has some room for improvement. The image above is Alodia.
This carnival is a 2 days event (10-11 March 2012 at 1 Utama shopping centre).
The event starts from 12pm to 6pm. First day is only opened to Astro customer (bring along your Astro bill to exchange for 4 entrance ticket). Second day (tomorrow 11 March) will be opened to public.
I arrived 10am niche but the reception did not know any agenda for the day. So I went to purchase movie tickets (John Carter 3D) and returned by 11:30am. The counter still not yet opened and not allowed to pre-take the entrance wrist bands. The queue was extremely long with few hundreds people.
Many visitors and participants started to get unrest as the event started late and the queue moved very slowly. We queued for 2 hours, and people behind us easily 3 hours.
In my personal opinion, the event could perhaps be improved in the following areas:
1) Create more publicity. Most of the visitors and shop promoters have no clue such an interesting event was held today. People got to know the happenings when they saw many funny “non-human” animated characters walking around the shopping mall.
(2) The counter could have opened at 10am and allow visitors to collect the entrance ticket, and returned by 12pm. The slow process of verifying Astro bill and assigning wrist band was too slow. That was the culprit of the painfully long queue.
The least that the organizer could have done is to put up an event schedule. My movie started on 2:45pm but their costume competition started on 2pm (but none of the reception team and setup team knew about the event activities).
(3) Cosplay would have less fun without taking pictures (and post to Facebook to show off to their friends). The organizer could provide a much better backdrop and lighting for the characters to strike their poses. I bet everyone has many limbs and heads behinds their snapshots.
I managed to ‘steal’ one of the photo booth’s backdrop to take few shots.
(4) I managed to watch the first half an hour of the costume competition. It was a disaster for the master of ceremony (emcee). It was obvious that the organizer has no prior communication with the participants. The emcee conducted the ad hoc questions in English, without being sensitive to some participants who were not well verse in English. It put the participants in awkward situation on the stage.
I am surprised this event was organized by Astro, as Astro is famous for conducting great events. Speechless. After the 3 hours queue and only take less than an hour of pictures. I have to leave for my movie, so I could not comment further.
Many of the shots were ‘hopeless’ (with arms and legs in the background) unless I get really close but then I missed out their beautiful costumes.
Luckily the dedication of the cosplay participants were awesome. They invested money, thoughts and effort to ensure they have a great time and meet new friends at the gathering.
I am old school cartoon readers so I have lost touch with the new anime characters. I could recognize hardly a handful of characters.
I am thankful that all the participants were very sporting. No one rejected an invitation to pose for a picture.
If you like anime and free tomorrow, perhaps you would like to drop by 1 Utama and join the last day of this interesting (but poorly organized) carnival. It was fun to see many cosplay participants at one place.
Grateful and big thanks to all the cosplay participants who put up a fun carnival. Awesome.
