We have been to Pantai Cahaya Bulan (PCB) numerous times but always didn’t get to see the making of the giant kites. On this trip to Kota Bharu (Kelantan), we made a special arrangement to find the legendary kitemaker, the maker of Wau Bulan.
What we knew was somewhere near PCB beach, there was a famous kitemaker who has been making winning kites for the competition.
After a few attempts searching around PCB, and with the guidance of the local folks, we finally found the legendary kitemaker, En. Shafie.
En. Shafie has been making the giant kites close to 40 years. The giant kites that he made were soaring in the sky above the coastal beach and padi field. He demonstrated to us how the vibration of the string could actually make the sound.
If you like to visit En. Shafie’s workshop, take the Pantai Cahaya Bulan beachfront direction from Kota Bharu town. Slow down at Kampung Badang. His workshop is near the police station, on the left hand side of the road. You could easily miss the shop because there is no signboard.
The GPS coordinates that I recorded is at N06° 10’35.8” E102° 15’13.2”
As you can see from the picture, there is no lighting inside the workshop, only a bit of natural light from the windows and front door. It is En. Shafie’s passion in the kite making that has been keeping this traditional handmade giant kite alive.
One day I would like to visit the competition of the giant kites on east coast. One could really appreciate its size and beauty when seeing the making of Wau. Wow!
